This is the reality the 3241 Foundation works within. The South of Johannesburg and greater Gauteng region is home to some of South Africa’s most densely populated informal settlements and working-class communities — areas where formal employment is inconsistent, where social grants stretch impossibly thin, and where a single medical emergency can collapse an entire household’s financial stability.
Our Poverty Alleviation Programme is not designed to make poverty more comfortable. It is designed to dismantle the conditions that keep families trapped within it. We combine immediate relief — food, emergency financial assistance, access to basic services — with structural support: skills development, micro-enterprise incubation, and connection to a network of organisations that can address the specific barriers each family faces.
We assess every applicant individually. There are no blanket handouts. There are pathways — customised to the person, to their circumstances, to what they are capable of when given the right support.
Currently, our programme serves 10 organisations in active support across the entire area
The poverty in our backyards is quiet. But it is not invisible — not to us.
